Matric Class of 2019

6 January 2020

Dear St Mary’s DSG Community

It is a delight to greet you at the start of this new decade, hoping that Christmas and New Year have been good to you, and wishing you the very best for 2020.

It is a particular delight that the first task I have is to share our fine 2019 IEB National Senior Certificate (matric) results with you.

I warmly congratulate the Class of 2019 on their achievements, and also congratulate their educators over the last 13 years, and their parents and family for their support.

All our learners passed the exam with a 99% BD pass and 1% Diploma pass. 89% of learners nationally obtained a BD pass, so it is pleasing to remain significantly above the national standard.

There were 180 distinctions from a class of 83 learners, which translates into an average of 2.2 each. This is an invidious statistic but it is interesting to compare with past years. In 2018 the average was 1.7 distinctions each from a class of 97 learners.

60% of the results were above 70%, and in Accounting, Afrikaans, Business Studies, Drama, French, History, Information Technology, Life Orientation, Maths, Music, and Sepedi, at least 30% of the results were distinctions.

16 learners got 5 or more distinctions. Our top achievers were: Lauren Hope 7, Ilana Jacobs 7, Sinenhle Myeni 7, Teagan Robertson 7, Mary Anne Gutter 6, Candice Kingiela 6, Abigail Stoffels 6, Mitchel Walls 6, Kombo Bingudza 5, Marcelle Debeil 5, Layyah Hassam 5, Khabi Honwana 5, Qiulin Li 5, Nomfihlo Ndebele 5, Lara Tanziani 5, Kerryn Moore 5.

Ilana Jacobs was in the top 1% in Afrikaans, English and Life Sciences, Mitchel Walls in the top 1% of Accounting, Candice Kingiela in the top 1% of French, Layyah Hassam in the top 1% I History, and Jayde Britton in the top 1% of Life Orientation.

The table below gives more detail by subject. These must be interpreted very carefully, as the number of candidates and indeed the strength of candidates taking a subject varies year by year.
