General Information

"Our primary focus is educational, not punitive"

The underpinning framework for the leadership structures of the school are unashamedly based on the concept of Servant Leadership where service comes before leadership.

Apart from a select number of leadership portfolios which must be filled by the aspirant matrics, well over 200 formal leadership positions must be filled in the school. These include representative positions on the School Council, membership of House Committees, Captains and vice captains of sport teams and responsibilities in tutor groups and the Debutante programme.

Leadership training is given to all pupils of the school in the belief that every person at one point or another will be or is a leader. This training may be formal, or as part of the schools co-curricular programme.

Welcome from the Head Girl

Sister Code

~ Whether we know it or not, each of us lives a life governed by internalised code of conduct. We call it "The Sister Code" ~

The Sister Code is a code of honour that exists between the girls at St Mary’s DSG. It is a code that each and every girl must uphold and adhere to and carry out in her daily life. At St Mary’s DSG we strive to create a disciplined, well-mannered and immaculate community. To achieve this we all have to obey school rules and be the best we can. The Sister Code is established in order to create a sense of school pride and honour amongst the girls and this code will enable the girls to act accordingly and to remind others to do so too without having to act punitively.

The Sister Code encourages School Council representatives to lead by example and not perform the tasks of the Matric leaders.

The Sister Code consists of the following:

Personal Conduct

Personal conduct is the individual’s ethical values, which indicate how one should behave based on one’s knowledge of moral duties and qualities.

Manners (etiquette)

The way one presents oneself in public, language usage and eating manners are a reflection of oneself as well as the school. Therefore St Mary’s DSG ladies strive to be well-mannered in all they do, greeting each other and visitors on school grounds, exquisite eating manners not only in the refectory but everywhere else, walking upright and confidently (i.e. no slouching and dragging your feet along the floor) and speaking in a well-articulated manner.

Respect:

  • Respect for one’s school - holding the school’s name in high esteem and standing up against bad-mouthing of our school.
  • Respect for one’s uniform - wearing the school uniform with pride and honour (obeying all school rules pertaining to school uniform). If you are off school-grounds in your school uniform, wear it with pride. Wear your blazer, walk upright with confidence, no slouching or wearing the uniform incorrectly and no eating while walking in public.
  • Respecting the teachers and other peers - formal greetings and allowing teachers and elder (senior) peers preference above you.
  • Even although “we are one”, one must not lose respect for the Matrics. One must act kindly and respectfully towards others.
  • It is respectful to hand in work on time, to be punctual and courteous.
  • Looking after school facilities shows one’s respect for things that do not belong to you but to the school. Do not damage school property such as desks in classrooms, do not leave bathrooms in a dirty state and do not damage the beautiful gardens at school.
  • By adhering to all school rules and the Code of Honour, displaying moral behaviour and displaying good manners on school property as well as off school-grounds, shows one’s respect for oneself as well as for your school.
